I've been researching cooking, recipes and food lately because I'm interested in expanding my cooking abilities and eating better. Since I live with two vegans who don't want meat in the house and since I have no real interest to learn how to cook meat, I've been examining a lot of vegetarian/vegan recipes and cookbooks and researching protein and how to get all your daily nutritional needs without eating meat. Some of the books are amazingly helpful and really great, but occasionally I find shit like this:

Milk is an excellent source of growth hormones, fat, cholesterol, allergenic proteins, blood, pus, antibiotics, bacteria, and viruses, and what the dairy industry touts as "the perfect food."

Stuff like that makes me want to punch vegan people in the face. I'm honestly, genuinely interested in learning more about veganism, not because I'll probably ever be 100% vegan or anything, but because I think I could benefit from including more vegan food in my diet. But I hate that radical "ANIMAL PRODUCTS ARE THE TOOL OF CORPORATE DEVIL-SPAWN AMERICA'S AGENDA TO TURN US ALL INTO MINDLESS ZOMBIE SOLDIERS" opinion.

Sure, the food industry has its share of issues. But when people try to win me over to veganism by claiming that my milk has BLOOD and PUS in it? Sorry if I write off all the other "facts" you spout. I'm not saying milk is perfect, but there are options out there. You can buy organic, for one.

Also, animal products are not the spawn of Satan. The food industry might be, but if you went out and got a farm and bought a cow and treated it well and--gasp--milked it and drank the milk, then I hardly think the cow is being abused and/or you're going to die and go to hell for being a sinner.

Aggressive vegans suck.

QUICK POLL:

I'm going to the video store today to rent season two of Doctor Who. Since today is Wednesday, it's a two-for-the-price-of-one rental day. Except neither my brother nor I can think of what to get. So--tell me your favorite TV shows (and if you want, why you like them)!

Don't worry about commenting too late.
A couple of you know already, but I got back from Europe. The conference I went to--focusing on leadership and hosting about 460 students between 15 & 19 from around the world--was fanastic. Not only did it really enlarging my sphere of political understanding, but the cities were all beautiful and the people I met were awesome. I was really nervous leaving because I had no idea what to expect, but after John dropped me off at the airport, I sat down with some fellow kids from the program and started talking to them. I found that it was pretty easy to talk to people after I realized that, like me, almost no one knew anyone else at the conference before that first day.

Brief overview:

The 460 kids were divided into smaller groups and each group was assigned one Faculty Advisor and a country. We didn't necessarily get sorted into the country we were from. For example, I was in the Haiti group. Each group has about 24 kids in it, thus two groups share a tour bus. The other group on our bus--Bus 1--was Nigeria. Our driver was a badass Austrian named Gunther who never spoke, smoked a lot and had a mustache. Haiti's FA was named Colleen and Nigeria's FA was named Peter. Our national guide was also named Peter, but we was Hungarian. The cities were visited were Vienna, Budapest and Prague.

This is part of the gate to a palace in Vienna.

This is the palace.

These are statues of women who the ruling male didn't like. They are behind the palace, near the garden.

This is a really famous church in Vienna; it's on a lot of postcards, including a couple I bought.

The first day I ate lunch with people I met at the airport/on the plane. From left to right is: Peter, Vanessa, Brendan and Mickey.

Graffiti on the back of a stall in Starbucks in Vienna. The poem near the middle reads:

Fuck is easy
Fuck is funny
Some people fuck for money
Do you want to fuck for money?
Fuck yourself and save your money

This is a museum I went to.

And a statue in the museum. There's a lot of groping naked men statues in Europe.

This is another museum, across from the one I went to.

This is a statue someone had built for his wife after she died. There's an amazing amount of detail.

The lion, for example, is crying.

Our guide around Vienna.

The Haitian Sensations! (My lovely group. ♥)

Manish, from Egypt, and Peter. We ate at this super fabulous Hungarian restaurant named Menza. Hungarian Peter suggested it. I loved it so much.

Hungarian Peter! He was such a dear.

Chelsea and I at the airport on our way back home. D:

Matt. I think this picture is classic because it sums up exactly how he is. He's one of the most amazingly intelligent people I've ever met.

Chelsea in her dress, on the way back from the dance.

Ophey and I on the boat where the dance was held.

Sara and I. Sara was part of the Haitan Sensations. She's from Norway.

Three boys from Haiti and Nigeria thought that it would be really neat to buy soviet hats. From left to right: Mike, Joel (from Venezula) and Raafi.

This is a statue in Prague of a man who was trying to spread Christianity, I think. People didn't like him, so they threw him off the bridge were this statue was later created. A couple of fishermen swore they saw five stars over his head when he fell, thus the stars above the statue.

This is Hannah. She was from the other group that my group shared a bus with. She's really nice.

I got a new hat. It's very similar to my old hat, except this one is lined so it's not so itchy, and it has ear-flaps.

All my pictures can be viewed here eventually. Right now, I really want to get something to eat.
